Key Requirements of the EN 16654 Standard
For a product to claim compliance, it must meet specific criteria outlined by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
- Height Requirement: The protector must cover the door gap from the bottom to a height of at least 1,800 mm to ensure a child cannot reach over it into the hazard zone.
- Child Appeal: To prevent accidents, devices must not be child-appealing—meaning they should not have toy-like shapes, sounds, or lights that might encourage a child to play with the door.
- Mechanical Integrity: Under test conditions, the device must not crack, break, or permanently deform in a way that creates new hazards like sharp edges.
- Protection Methods: The standard recognizes three methods: hazard shielding (covering the gap), shut prevention (keeping the door from closing fully), and shut controlling (slowing down the door).
